As part of my Master of Environment degree, I worked with members of the Heiltsuk Nation on a 46-minute documentary film about an Indigenous cultural gathering called Tribal Canoe Journeys. The film ‘Glwa: Resurgence of the Ocean-Going Canoe’ follows Heiltsuk leader Frank Brown and a group of youth as they paddle down the coast of Washington State to the Tribal Canoe Journeys gathering. Over a period of twelve days, the journey helped youth learn and revitalize their cultural songs, dances, stories, language, teachings, and other traditions. The film premiered at imagineNATIVE Film and Media Arts Festival in October 2017. It is available for distribution through Vtape.
